Four ghosts came to him in the dead of the night.
And begged him to change his ways.
Past and present said his future just might
Be wearing ponderous chains.

More gravy than grave, the old man, he cursed
As the spirits sent showed him his sins.
Indifference and misery. Man at his worst.
Shadows of how things had been.

Two children stared back with anguished eyes.
Their names- ignorance and want.
Hideous, miserable, covered by flies.
Their bodies sat twisted and gaunt.

Whom do they belong to, spirit?
They are yours. They belong to mankind.
Their presence spells doom. Now fear it.
Or make the world worse and stay blind.

Take me away from the pain I have wrought.
Damn to hell all the ill will I’ve done.
These vicious visions cannot be for naught.
God bless us every one.

Church bells rang out. The old man awoke.
Rays of sunlight warmed his skin.
A chance for redemption, a realized hope.
Casting out all his past sins.

Charity, Mercy and Laughter.
They became his business.
They were the riches that mattered
